Original Paul Chidlaw Oil on Canvas Portrait
Item Details
An original mixed media on board painting by very well-respected, long-time professor of the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and well-listed painter Paul Chidlaw (1900-1989). From 1919-1923 Chidlaw was a student at the Academy where he would later teach; following his studies he designed for films, and in 1927 began studies at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Fountainbleu, France. Thereafter he studied with Jean Despuiols and Andre’Lhote, Paris. Chidlaw made work with virtually ever media that can be applied to a canvas. His artwork is in the collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University, as well as in numerous private collections. The Chidlaw Gallery at the Art Academy of Cincinnati is named in his honor. Chidlaw is most revered for being the first prominent Abstract Expressionist on the scene in Cincinnati. This painting is interestingly directly contrary to the style of painting for which Chidlaw is so famously known. The painting is also unsigned but was acquired through the sister of one of Chidlaw’s well known students Roland Huston, it also closely corresponds with another painting in this sale, listed as 14CIN310-120. This painting features a portrait of a beautiful young woman dressed in a blue bonnet and shawl, painted against a turquoise ground with golden shades, probably of the canvas, showing through. She is young and very beautiful, however stern, conservative, and maybe angry. Her face is tense, and her eyes are full of thought and toil. The painting is presented in a fine frame of gilded wood.
