A 19th C. Italian Alabaster Bust by Guiseppe Bessi (1857-1922)

  • REVISED. A 19th century Italian sculpted alabaster bust of a young woman wearing a laurel crown by Guiseppe Bessi (Italian 1857-1922), signed at the back G. Bessi. The woman wears a serene expression and gazes upward to the left, her hair is beautifully detailed and worn in a bun at the nape of the neck. The square neck of the dress and the sleeves have an incised decorative pattern and the the woman’s head and shoulders rest on an oval base. Guiseppe Bessi was the Director of the Volterra Art School (Volterra is known for it’s source of alabaster) from 1891-1922. Many of his works are owned by the Museum of Volterra.

Condition

The bust is lovely with the alabaster being very clean and milky white. There is one very insignificant chip in the bun at the back of the head.
