A rare 1883/1884 Douay-Rheims bible, profusely illustrated with numerous steel plates and engravings. The text of this Bible is called the Douay-Rheims Bible due to the English translation of the Old Testament first published by the English College at Douay in 1609 and the New Testament by the English College at Rheims in 1582. The Douay–Rheims Bible is a translation of the Latin Vulgate, which is a translation from Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts and was the result of the efforts of Saint Jerome (345–420), and was declared to be the authentic Latin version of the Bible by the Council of Trent. The text covers the complete Old and New Testament as well as the books that are often referred to as the Apocrypha (Esdras, Esdras II, Tobias, Judith and Esther). To support the study of this Bible many notes and explanations are added to the text in chapter descriptions and footnotes and a large number of additional sections, like portraits of pontiffs, archbishops and bishops, an illustrated Catholic Bible Dictionary (128 pages), History of the Books of the Holy Catholic Bible, Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a full-color illustrated section on the stations of the cross, several galleries of scripture illustrations, a table showing how the earth was re-peopled by Noah, a list of the High Priests of the Hebrews, measurements and coins of the Bible, animals of the Bible, geology of Bible lands and so much more. The whole beautifully illustrated with colored maps, steel plates and multiple full page Gustave Doré and Leonardo Da Vinci engravings. There are also Approbations by various (American) cardinals and bishops indicating their approval of the Bible and of the notations by the Rev. George Leo Haydock. The cover of the Bible is deeply tooled leather with 22k gold gilt and all page edges are gilt as well. It must be noted that some view this rare edition of the bible as containing evidence of the work of the Illuminati with Masonic symbolism on the covers (the all seeing eye and pyramid) and throughout. This Bible is truly a must-have for any Christian, Historian, Mason, Rosicrucian or student of Theology.

Condition

Both the front and the back cover of the book are separated and the entire leather cover at the spine is missing. Otherwise, the binding is tight, the engravings are crisp, the corners and edges are clean and all pages with the exception of the last few are intact. There is little to no foxing, no musty smell and no water damage. The color illustrations are vivid and bright. The presentation page is also blank with no inscription.
