Durand Heliogravure of Rembrandt's Etched Landscape "Omval" 1643
Item Details
An antique heliogravure, circa 1850, by French master printmaker Amand Durand of Rembrandt’s early landscape etching ‘Omval,’ 1643. Typical of his early landscapes, Rembrandt heavily detailed the foreground, a magnificent gnarled old tree which he placed against an untreated open sky. The human figures in this work are perfunctorily sketched, the reverse treatment of the master’s paintings, in which he painstakingly renders the rich inner fabric of his subjects. In the mid-19th century, because the impressions of Rembrandt’s original work were worn out, respected engraver Amand Durand worked exhaustively using first and second state etchings to recreate copper plates in order to duplicate faithfully the original works of the Dutch genius. Heliogravures such as this are masterpieces in their own right. Matted in ivory tone and set in simple black frame under glass.
