Original Walt Burton Digitally Printed Photo Collage
Item Details
An original collage, reproduced via digital printing, by well-regarded photographer and local hero Walt Burton (1935- ). The photographer is well-known for having photographed for magazines such as Newsweek, Vogue, Harpers, Time and Sport’s Illustrated in the 1960s and ‘70s; he also exhibited in New York at Witkin in the exhibition ’Forty Greatest Photographers,’ which included Steichen, Stieglitz and Weston, to name a few. Burton has made an extensive career as a lecturer and speaker at universities around the United States. This particular print is exemplary of the artist’s work in the medium of photo-based collage. The aesthetic is rooted in traditions of Folk, Pop, and Deco. This collage is one of the more notably humorous, albeit a dark and twisted humor contrary to convention, compositions we’re featuring; the text featured rather prominently in this collage reads ‘Thank you doctor for fixing my brain.’ The lower center is dominated by a wild photo collage, the centerpiece of which would seem to be a flesh colored form that’s had a face drawn into it. On its left side is a chaotic jumble of color, and to the right a Madonna-like figure, her hands clasped around an evil jack-in-the-box head on a spring. A very strong statement is herein being made. The artist has signed the piece to the verso, dating it 2001, it comes to you unframed, awaiting your choice of presentation.
