Antique Embroidered Chair

Item Details

A magnificent antique Victorian Rococo Revival chair with embroidered needlepoint scenes and natural motifs. The frame is hardwood with a rich dark finish, carved with curving lines and motifs. The seat, back, and even the armrests are covered in embroidered fabric, with a varied but subdued palette of colors, depicting exquisitely detailed scenes from nature surrounded by floral and botanical motifs. The seat depicts a wolf rearing up at the base of a fruiting tree, on top of which an exotic bird (perhaps a peacock) is perched. The seat back depicts two figures seated under a tree, one in a purple robe and holding a staff, perhaps a prince or a rich man. The other figure wears more earthy colors, carries a burden on his back, and has his hand out to receive something from the first figure, perhaps money. Two more exotic birds are perched at the top of the tree. The back surface of the seat is covered in a velvety fabric in a sort of dark goldenrod color. This fabric as well as the embroidered fabric is attached to the wood frame with round dark metal fasteners. The front two feet end in casters.
