Van Briggle Vase with Butterflies

Item Details

A Van Briggle Pottery vase in the Art Nouveau style, with embossed butterflies. The squat form vase features relief butterflies to both the front and back, the butterflies posed on a heart-shaped leaf form. The vase is in a beautiful matte blue green glaze and is marked with the Van Briggle mark to the verso and the number ‘28’. Van Briggle Pottery was started in the late 19th century in Colorado Springs by Artus Van Briggle, an accomplished American painter of Dutch descent who studied in Paris and gained acclaimed as a celebrated pottery artist at Rookwood Pottery of Cincinnati. Van Briggle Pottery is best known for the extraordinarily beautiful matte glazes and sinuous organic forms of their designs. Van Briggle Pottery is the living heritage of an extraordinary artist whose heart and hands were given only half a lifetime, and to his wife, Anne, whose own dedication and fine artistry after Artus’ death carried their vision to success in its earliest years.
