An original 1901 lithograph by well-listed Art Nouveau master of the belle epoque of posters, Paul Berthon (1872-1909). Berthon captured the famous French actress Sarah Bernhardt at the peak of her stardom in one of her most time-honored roles as the illustrious Cleopatra. The French actress’ fame, first earned on the Parisian stag, had at this point taken her well beyond and proliferating the world over. In the year of this poster’s publication the actress was 56 years old. Bernhardt is herein framed with flowers all around her, characteristic of the Art Nouveau style, in luscious hues of gold and ochre. The print is plate signed to the lower left-hand corner and presented in an antique wooden frame that is likely original to the piece, bearing the label to the verso at top center of an art seller presumably located in New York. An incredible image by one of the genre’s most hallowed names.
