Item Details
A set of four Tony Sarg-designed painted tin trays for Social Supper American Art Works. These delightful bright yellow trays feature a pair of playful orange and pink elephants, illustrated in Sarg’s inimitable style, with navy and pink wavy borders. Each of the trays is signed to the left by Tony Sarg. The U.S. commercial artist Tony Sarg (1882-1942) is best known as a designer and producer of puppet shows. He also illustrated children’s books, magazines, and newspapers. In 1915 Sarg began to make marionettes and soon created the puppet show Tony Sarg’s Marionettes. It toured throughout the country in the 1920s, enjoying immense popularity. During this period Sarg also wrote and illustrated children’s books, including Tony Sarg’s Book for Children from Six to Sixty (1924), Tony Sarg’s Wonder Zoo (1925), and Tony Sarg’s Wonder Book (1941). He produced illustrations for The New York Times and many national magazines. For the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, Sarg designed outsize cartoon-figure balloons, which quickly became icons of the annual event. He also designed furniture, wallpaper, and textiles for children. (icollector.com)
