Original Paul Chidlaw Mixed Media Painting on Paper
Item Details
An original mixed media painting on paper by well-listed and esteemed Cincinnati artist and teacher, Paul Chidlaw (1900-1989). Chidlaw taught at both Our Lady of Cincinnati College (now part of Xavier University) and the Art Academy of Cincinnati from 1946-1963, where he was also a student from 1919-1923 before going on to study at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Fountainbleu, France. Chidlaw’s art is highly revered and is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University as well as in many private collections. The Chidlaw Gallery at the Art Academy of Cincinnati is also named in his honor, as he is still revered for being one of the first Abstract Expressionists to do work in Cincinnati as seen by his gorgeous vibrant brush strokes typical to his painting style. In his later years, however, Chidlaw suffered from macular degeneration; yet he still continued to produce art via black-and-white drawings that he could only view with his peripheral vision. In this beautiful painting the artist has articulated several silhouettes of a female nude, astir with movement, weighted in reclining, and clamorous with gesture, this painting is certainly archetypic of the artist’s oeuvre. The painting is signed to the lower left-hand corner and is presented in a fine gilt wood frame detailed around its edge with wide ribbing and sepia wash, double matting to edge.
