An assortment of 12 rather dramatic book plates from well regarded and well listed, British military painter Stanley Berkeley (1855–1909). These book plates are from a western novel, and feature romanticized depictions of cowboys and indians, living hard lives on the treacherous range. Not all of the bookplates are attributable to Berkeley, some are visibly the work of a different artist. The illustrations are executed as wood-engravings, and are truly masterworks, each plate serving as an incredible testament to the might of human hands. This lot features a particularly incredible image of an Eagle attacking a large Elk. This small collection would be an excellent resource for any artist, as reference material, or extremely tasteful decorative art. The book plates are housed in plastic coverlets, two per page, and await your choice of presentation. Most of Berkeley’s illustrations feature in plate signatures carved into one of the bottom corners.
