Howard Apley was a New York-born artist and musician of singular vision and remarkable depth. A protégé of prominent modernist Morris Davidson, Apley developed an evocative Abstract-Impressionist style defined by bold color fields and "faceless" figures—a unique visual vocabulary he refined over eight decades. His work was fueled by an intense interiority and focused sensibility that his family recognizes today as neurodivergent. This singular perspective extended to music; a brilliant pianist, Apley hand-built his own harpsichords and performed the masterworks of Bach with local ensembles. While he practiced orthodontics in Syosset, NY, before retiring to Sunderland, MA, art and music remained his truest vocations. From his early modernist training in the 1940s to his final years, Apley’s life was a continuous, multifaceted pursuit of intellectual rigor and creative beauty. He continued to paint and play until his passing at age 97.
