Empire Birdseye Maple Four-Drawer Chest, 19th Century
Item Details
This 19th-century American Empire chest of drawers is constructed with a striking combination of highly figured Birdseye maple and rich mahogany veneers. The chest features four graduated drawers, including a classic overhanging top drawer characteristic of the late Empire period. Each drawer face is primarily Birdseye maple accented by mahogany crossbanding and fitted with turned wooden knobs. The case is supported by massive, forward-scrolled S-curve feet. While exhibiting visible veneer chips and surface wear appropriate for its age, the piece retains the bold proportions and contrasting wood tones definitive of American classical cabinetry.
