2'8 x 4'9 Hand-Knotted Afghan Baluch Prayer Rug

Item Details

This hand-knotted Afghan Baluch prayer rug features a traditional mihrab design on a wool foundation. The central camel-toned field is populated with vertical columns of stylized botanical motifs, framed by an architectural arch containing decorative hand symbols. The composition is enclosed by several geometric guard borders in a classic Baluch palette of deep madder red, indigo, and charcoal. Constructed with a dense wool pile and finished with hand-overcast dark wool selvedges, this rug represents the nomadic weaving traditions of Western Afghanistan. Its small scale and symbolic imagery make it a distinct example of tribal textile art from the late 20th century.
