Antique Chinese Lacquered Elm Credenza

Item Details

This 19th century Chinese sideboard is a rare example of period blue-lacquered elmwood cabinetry. Originating from Northern China, it features a robust configuration. The piece is constructed entirely using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery without the use of nails or screws, allowing the elmwood to breathe. The drawers exhibit hand-cut, uneven dovetails, a definitive sign of manual 19th-century craftsmanship. The surface retains its original, hand-applied blue lacquer finish, which has developed a fine network of natural cracks (craquelure) and significant, honest wear at the points of frequent contact. It is fitted with its original brass medallion hardware and sliding lock pins, displaying a deep, unpolished patina.
