Library Bureau Makers Oak Card Catalog, Early 20th Century
Item Details
This antique 30-drawer card catalog was produced by the Library Bureau Makers, the premier provider of specialized library furniture in the early 20th century. Constructed of durable quarter-sawn oak, the cabinet is divided into two stackable sections, each housing 15 drawers with integrated brass label-holder pulls. The drawers exhibit traditional dovetail construction and retain their original internal hardware. While the exterior displays the characteristic "tiger" grain of oak, the top surface shows heavy signs of use, including staining and finish wear consistent with a piece salvaged from an active institutional setting. This cabinet represents a significant artifact of American library history and the organizational innovations of Melvil Dewey.
