Baker George III Style Glass-Front Bookcase
Item Details
This large mahogany glass-front bookcase by Baker Furniture is an elegant example of 20th-century American cabinetry in the George III style. The upper case features four glazed doors accented with delicate diamond-patterned tracery, opening to reveal a spacious interior with adjustable shelving. The cabinet is capped by a richly carved cornice featuring dentil molding and neoclassical swags, and it sits upon a separate base stand with a complex lattice fretwork frieze centered by a robustly carved shell. Raised on fluted legs that terminate in block feet, the piece demonstrates the ‘muscularity and grace’ typical of Baker’s historical revival collections. While the piece exhibits a significant loss to the upper left molding and scattered surface marks, it remains a ‘legitimate antique’ reproduction of superior craftsmanship.
