Leulumoega Fou School of Fine Arts Polychrome Carved Wood Pillar, 2000
Item Details
This monumental 60-inch carved wood pillar is a significant work from the Leulumoega Fou School of Fine Arts, a prestigious institution in Samoa renowned for preserving and evolving Pacific artistic traditions. Dated 2000, the pillar is hand-carved in high relief from a single dense hardwood log. The narrative carving wraps around the entire circumference, depicting an abundant tropical landscape featuring hibiscus, daisies, and broad botanical leaves, all finished in a sophisticated earthy polychrome palette. The base is anchored by a traditional geometric lattice pattern, reflecting the architectural motifs found in Samoan fale (meeting houses). This work represents the school’s unique "narrative pillar" style, developed to document Samoan flora and myths through a contemporary lens.
