4'8 x 7' Hand-Knotted Caucasian Kazak Area Rug

Item Details

This late 19th century Caucasian Kazak rug is a robust example of tribal weaving, featuring a complex geometric medallion centered on a deep navy blue field. The field is densely populated with a variety of archaic motifs, including stylized birds, rosettes, and small protective symbols rendered in coral, sage green, and ochre. The composition is framed by an intricate series of borders, notably a wide coral-red band with repeating geometric blossoms. Woven entirely of wool, the rug displays the slightly irregular, charming geometry of village manufacture and the beautiful tonal variation (abrash) indicative of natural vegetal dyes. While showing honest wear consistent with its century-long history, the rug remains a vibrant and culturally significant textile.
