Set of Six American Federal Style Stenciled Fancy Chairs, Mid-19th Century

Item Details

This set of six American ‘Fancy’ chairs reflects the mid-19th century transition between Federal and Empire styles. The set includes four chairs with broad yoke-style top rails and two with waisted fiddle-back splats, all united by a consistent black finish and hand-stenciled gilt decoration. The central splats feature classical motifs of fruit baskets and floral sprays, complemented by delicate pin-striping on the turned legs and stretchers. Each chair is fitted with a hand-woven cane seat. These chairs represent the vernacular ‘Hitchcock’ tradition of decorated furniture, showcasing the hand-painted craftsmanship common in New England homes during the mid-1800s. The set retains a rich, historical patina with visible wear that underscores its nearly 200-year history.
