Victorian Walnut Commode with Marble Top
Item Details
This fine Victorian Renaissance Revival commode, dating to approximately 1870, is a quintessential example of high-style American furniture from the post-Civil War era. Constructed of solid walnut with rich burl walnut veneers, the chest features a removable white Carrara marble top with a soft ogee edge. The case houses four graduated drawers, each ornamented with central relief carvings and flanked by original, hand-carved foliate ‘nut’ pulls. Architectural fluted pilasters anchor the corners, leading down to a robust molded plinth base. Examination of the drawer construction reveals authentic hand-cut dovetails and original secondary wood bottoms showing significant oxidation.
