French Provincial Style Carved Walnut Buffet à Deux Corps, Mid to Late 19th C.

Item Details

This rare French Provincial style walnut unit consists of a base sideboard and a coordinating upper hutch featuring an integrated mechanical clock. The forensic analysis of the construction reveals a mid-19th-century origin, distinguished by the use of early hand-forged mechanical fasteners. Specifically, the hutch is secured to the base using recessed iron bolts and rosettes, a method characteristic of period joinery designed for transport and stability before the widespread use of modern screws. The walnut primary wood shows a deep, aged patina with hand-finished, slightly irregular edges. The base features four central drawers with hand-cut dovetails and ornate brass-toned hardware, flanked by cupboard doors with raised moldings. Despite condition issues, including a split back board and a chip in the molding, the piece maintains its original structural elements and functional clock movement.
