This mid-19th-century American blanket chest is a ‘legitimate product of its time,’ crafted from solid pine and featuring an original faux-grain painted finish. The rectangular case includes a hinged lid that opens to reveal a spacious interior lined with historic floral-patterned wallpaper, a common 19th-century method for protecting linens. The interior is fitted with a traditional ‘till’ or small lidded storage compartment for valuables. Practicality is provided by heavy cast iron bail handles on the sides and a simple, sturdy plinth base. Forensic wear patterns on the top and edges reflect a ‘long handling’ history, resulting in an authentic aged patina that confirms its 100-plus years of existence.
