This impressive William and Mary style secretary desk by Southampton Furniture is a high-quality 20th-century revival of an early 18th-century English form. The upper cabinet features a distinctive double-arch bonnet top over two doors that open to reveal an extensively fitted interior of cubby holes and small drawers. The lower section consists of a slant-front desk that opens to a further fitted writing surface, supported by three long drawers with lion-mask brass ring pulls. The piece is finished in richly figured, book-matched burl walnut veneers. Despite its antique appearance, the presence of perfectly symmetrical machine-cut dovetails and the modern ‘Southampton’ manufacturer’s plaque confirm its 20th-century origins as a fine reproduction piece.
