George III Style Mahogany Chest-on-Chest with Chinese Chippendale Base, 19th C.
Item Details
This 19th-century mahogany chest-on-chest is a refined example of the George III Revival style, incorporating ‘Chinese Chippendale’ architectural elements. The upper section is configured with a classic two-over-three drawer arrangement, while the lower section provides two additional full-width drawers. The piece is distinguished by its elaborate fretwork base, featuring pierced geometric patterns and bracket feet. Decorative cross-banding accents the drawer fronts, which are fitted with ornate brass ‘batwing’ escutcheons and swan-neck bail handles. Internal evidence reveals superior craftsmanship, including hand-cut dovetail joinery and oak secondary timbers. The brass locks are stamped by the notable Willenhall makers, A. Lewis & Sons, affirming its British origin. This tallboy offers substantial storage capacity while serving as a sophisticated statement of 18th-century English design sensibilities as reimagined in the Victorian era.
