Gabberts Chinoiserie Faux Tortoiseshell Cabinet, Late 20th Century

Item Details

This late 20th-century Chinoiserie cabinet features a distinctive faux tortoiseshell finish, achieved through an ‘oil drop’ lacquer technique that mimics the depth and organic patterning of natural shell. The piece is anchored by a large, circular brass lock plate in the traditional Chinese style, complete with a horizontal slide bolt and dual square drop pulls. It rests on a modified Ming-style base with low bracket feet. The interior opens to reveal a single utility drawer and an adjustable storage shelf, both finished in a contrasting light green lacquer. This cabinet represents the Hollywood Regency trend of the 1970s and 80s, where traditional Asian silhouettes were reimagined with bold, high-gloss finishes for the American luxury market.
