American Flat-Top Pine Steamer Trunk, Late 19th Century

Item Details

This late 19th-century American steamer trunk is a robust example of Victorian-era travel luggage. Constructed from solid pine planks, the trunk is reinforced with extensive black-painted iron strapping and corner brackets, a design engineered for the rigors of transatlantic or cross-country steamship and rail travel. The flat-top silhouette was specifically favored for its ability to be stacked securely in cargo holds. Internally, the trunk preserves its original lithographed paper lining, featuring a delicate blue and red geometric-floral pattern that provides a sharp decorative contrast to its rugged exterior.
