2'5 x 4'2 Hand-Knotted Afghan Baluch Accent Rug

Item Details

This antique Afghan Baluch rug is a significant example of West Afghan tribal weaving, defined by its traditional wool-on-wool construction. The field features an allover lattice of interconnected diamonds, populated by small geometric blossoms in a somber yet resonant palette of deep madder, indigo, and charcoal. Unlike modern commercial productions, the foundation is made of natural, dark-colored hand-spun wool, which is visible at the worn fringe ends and contributes to the rug’s remarkably supple and ‘floppy’ handle. The sides are reinforced with dark goat-hair selvedges, a hallmark of nomadic craftsmanship designed for durability in harsh environments. The low-pile surface exhibits a soft, aged patina and authentic abrash, reflecting its over 100-year history.
