10'1 x 12'9 Hand-Knotted Chinese Nichols Art Deco Style Room Sized Rug

Item Details

This room-sized antique Chinese Art Deco rug features a warm tan open field that serves as a canvas for a sophisticated asymmetrical floral composition. A slender branch of plum blossoms and peonies rises from the lower right, terminating in a decorative hanging flower basket. The rug is framed by a striking navy blue primary border and an inner raspberry-red guard band, accented by corner medallions containing traditional Shou longevity characters. Produced in the legendary Tientsin workshops established by American entrepreneur Walter Nichols, this piece utilizes exceptionally dense, high-grade wool on a robust cotton foundation. The interplay of bold Western Art Deco colors with traditional Chinese pictorial elements makes this a quintessential example of early 20th-century luxury export weaving.
