5' x 6'5 Hand-Knotted Afghan Kunduz Area Rug

Item Details

This hand-knotted Afghan Kunduz rug is a quintessential example of Northern Afghan tribal weaving from the mid-20th century. The deep scarlet field is anchored by a rhythmic repeat of geometric medallions, a design heritage shared with the neighboring Turkmen tribes. A defining characteristic of this piece is its dark wool foundation, visible in the integrated fringe and the deep charcoal tones of the weft. The rug displays an attractive ‘abrash’ (natural color variation) in its madder-red dyes and shows authentic ‘corrosion’ wear where the dark, mineral-dyed wool has aged more rapidly than the surrounding pile, creating a three-dimensional, high-low texture sought after by collectors of tribal textiles.
