American Primitive Painted Pine Mule Chest, Early 19th Century

Item Details

This early 19th-century American mule chest is a quintessential example of Federal-era country furniture. Constructed of wide-growth white pine, the chest features a deep upper storage well accessed by a hinged lid, positioned above a single long drawer. The drawer is expertly joined with robust, hand-cut dovetails and is fitted with rare, period-correct pressed brass oval bails embossed with a classical ‘Peace’ motif (a bird with an olive branch). The case is elevated on traditional boot-jack ends with an attractive scalloped apron. The piece retains an old, possibly original, dry red wash finish that has patinated over two centuries to a deep oxblood hue. This chest represents a primary document of early American domestic life and remains a highly sought-after form for collectors of Americana.
