Late Victorian Carved Cherry Chest of Drawers, Circa 1890

Item Details

This Late Victorian cherry chest of drawers is a representative example of late 19th-century American industrial cabinetmaking. Constructed of solid cherry, the chest is defined by three full-width graduated drawers, each showcasing unique incised carvings ranging from sunburst florals to stylized reeding. The joinery features uniform machine-cut dovetails, identifying the piece as a product of the mechanized workshops of the 1890s. Fitted with stamped brass pulls and featuring a hand-planed pine back, this bureau combines the mass-production efficiency of the Gilded Age with the enduring appeal of native American hardwoods.
