American Late Victorian Oak Three-Drawer Chest, Late 19th Century

Item Details

This late 19th-century American chest is an excellent example of functional country cabinetry, featuring the distinctively flecked grain of quartersawn white oak. The unit is designed with an overhanging beveled top above three graduated drawers, each fitted with its original brass lock escutcheon and highly decorative pierced ‘batwing’ bail handles. The case sides extend to form a simple scalloped apron, providing a light architectural lift to the sturdy frame. The drawer construction utilized simple nailed butt joints, a hallmark of utilitarian vernacular furniture from the late Victorian era. With its compact scale and secure drawer configuration, this piece serves as both a historical specimen and a versatile organizational element for modern interiors.
