American Country Style Faux-Front Blanket Chest, Early to Mid-19th Century

Item Details

This American Country Federal blanket chest is constructed from solid pine and features a traditional red-painted wash finish typical of the early 19th-century folk aesthetic. The upper portion consists of a hinged top that opens to reveal a deep storage well, while the facade is designed with four graduated drawers—the upper two being false fronts for the chest well and the lower two being functional storage. Each drawer front is fitted with brass bail handles on circular backplates. The case exhibits hand-cut dovetail joinery and is supported by a simple scalloped apron transitioning into bracket feet. Visual evidence, including the irregular width of the backboards and the thickness of the drawer sides, confirms a period manufacture circa 1820–1840. This piece serves as a significant example of functional regional cabinetry, retaining its original-style surface and hardware configuration.
