Federal Style Inlaid Mahogany Chest of Drawers
Item Details
This American Federal style chest of drawers is crafted from mahogany with extensive string inlay decorating the three drawer fronts. The inlay features a central circular medallion flanked by geometric ‘D’ shaped borders, a characteristic motif of the Neoclassical period. Each drawer is fitted with period-appropriate brass batwing hardware and central keyhole escutcheons. The case is supported by a scalloped apron transitioning into splayed bracket feet. Internal examination reveals hand-cut dovetail joints and secondary wood (likely pine) that has naturally darkened over time, providing evidence of early 19th-century construction. The back panel consists of wide, hand-planed boards featuring a faint chalk inscription. This piece represents a quintessential example of American Federal cabinetry, balancing functional storage with the refined decorative sensibilities of the era.
