Hitchcock Style Stencil-Decorated Side Chair with Rush Seat, 19th Century
Item Details
This 19th-century American side chair is a classic example of ‘Hitchcock’ style fancy furniture. Constructed from mixed hardwoods, the chair features a dark painted finish decorated with traditional gold-toned stenciling on the crest and stay rails, depicting a central fruit motif surrounded by stylized leaves. The frame is characterized by a curved back with turned elements and tapered front legs with ring turnings and ball feet. A hand-woven rush seat is set into the frame, showing significant historical wear consistent with mid-1800s utility. The chair exhibits a heavy patina of age, including localized finish loss and structural oxidation of fasteners at the joinery.
