Late Federal Style Mahogany Drop-Leaf Dining Table with Spiral-Turned Legs
Item Details
This American drop-leaf dining table dates to the early to mid-19th century and is constructed primarily of mahogany. The table features a classic Federal silhouette with a rectangular central top flanked by two deep drop leaves that have rounded corners. When extended, the leaves are supported by a gate-leg mechanism integrated into the frame. The table is distinguished by four robust spiral-turned legs, also referred to as rope-twist carvings, which are separated by delicate ring-turned collars and terminate in elegant baluster and peg feet. The mahogany displays a rich, warm patina, though the surface exhibits significant signs of historical use, including surface abrasions and localized finish wear characteristic of 19th-century utility furniture.
