American Country Sheraton Cherry and Pine One-Drawer Side Table, 19th Century
Item Details
This 19th-century American side table is a quintessential example of the Country Sheraton style, blending functional vernacular form with late neoclassical proportions. Constructed with a contrasting dark-stained pine top over a cherry wood apron, the table features a single drawer with a period turned wood knob. The drawer construction exhibits wide, hand-cut dovetails and a hand-planed bottom, characteristic of pre-industrial artisan craftsmanship. The table is elevated on four rhythmic, ring-and-ball turned legs that terminate in elegant tapered feet. The piece retains an ‘honest’ historic surface, showing the abrasions and markings of nearly two centuries of domestic utility, particularly across the expansive overhanging top.
