L. Hitchcock with Other Paint-Decorated Fancy Chairs and Stools
Item Details
This assorted grouping of American seating consists of an armchair, two side chairs, and one stool, all executed in the Federal ‘Fancy Chair’ tradition. The armchair is a mid-20th-century revival piece by L. Hitchcock, featuring the company’s signature gilt-stenciled warranty on the rear seat rail and decorated with floral motifs on an ebonized frame. The two side chairs represent 19th-century forms: one features a faux-rosewood painted finish with a decorative scroll-cut stay slat and an authentic hand-woven rush seat, while the other displays an ebonized finish with a stenciled fruit basket motif and matching rush seat. The set is completed by a small rectangular stool with turned legs and a woven rush top. This collection demonstrates the longevity of the Hitchcock aesthetic in American decorative arts across two centuries.
