Set of Five Paint-Decorated Hitchcock Style Fancy Chairs with Rush Seats
Item Details
This set of six American ‘Fancy Chairs’ dates to the Federal period, approximately 1820–1840. The chairs are constructed of turned hardwood with a black-painted finish, elaborately decorated with gold-toned stenciled motifs. The stay slats prominently feature a classic Neoclassical fruit-basket design, flanked by floral and foliate borders on the uprights. The architectural silhouette is defined by pillow-top crest rails and slender ring-turned front legs highlighted by gilt-painted bands. Each chair retains a hand-woven rush seat, which provides a rustic textural contrast to the formal ebonized frames. This suite represents the transition from the strict lines of the Federal style to the more robust ‘Classical’ aesthetic, popularized by regional makers like Lambert Hitchcock.
