Queen Anne Mahogany Tilt-Top Candlestand, Mid to Late 18th Century
Item Details
This 18th-century mahogany tea table is a classic example of Georgian utility and design. The circular top, crafted from a single wide plank of mahogany, is mounted to a functional support, a sophisticated mechanism that permits both a 90-degree vertical tilt for storage and a full 360-degree horizontal rotation for service. The underside reveals two original supporting battens and a period brass spring latch with deep verdigris patination. The table is supported by a ring-turned urn-form pedestal on a tripod base of cabriole legs terminating in simple pad feet. The wood retains a deep, historic finish with characteristic ‘alligatoring’ on the central column and a series of water rings on the top surface that verify its long history of domestic use.
