American Empire Mahogany and Cherry Chest of Drawers, Circa 1840

Item Details

This mid-19th-century American Empire chest of drawers is a robust example of Late Classical cabinetry. The piece features a characteristic overhanging top section with two ogee-profile ‘wave’ drawers, supported by decorative turned pendants. Below, three graduating long drawers are fitted with turned wood knobs and inset brass key escutcheons. The case is constructed with cherry primary wood and mahogany veneers, exhibiting the deep, rich patination associated with age. A notable feature is the high, decoratively scrolled backsplash, which carries a centralized shell-motif carving. Interior drawer analysis reveals large, hand-cut dovetails and hand-planed secondary pine bottoms. The reverse is finished with thick, vertically-oriented backboards secured with square-head nails, typical of pre-industrial American furniture production.
