This mahogany tilt-top table serves as a sophisticated example of 19th-century furniture, blending Federal and Chippendale design elements. The circular top is centered by a finely detailed sunburst patera inlay, a hallmark of the Neoclassical movement. Uniquely, the top is attached to a functional mechanism, which permits the surface to both tilt for vertical storage and rotate horizontally for service. The underside reveals structural support battens and period-appropriate hardware. The table is elevated by a ring-turned pedestal on a tripod base of cabriole legs, terminating in hand-carved ball-and-claw feet. The finish exhibits a rich historic patina, including characteristic crazing on the column and surface wear to the top.
