Victorian Rococo Revival Carved Walnut Balloon-Back Side Chair, 19th Century
Item Details
This Victorian side chair is a classic example of the Rococo Revival style prevalent in the 19th century. Constructed from solid walnut, the chair features a distinctive ‘balloon’ back defined by an ornate crest rail with pierced scrolling acanthus motifs. A central horizontal stay rail is prominently carved with a realistic rose and trailing leaves, a motif mirrored in the floral cartouche on the serpentine seat rail. The chair is supported by graceful cabriole legs, each detailed with floral-carved knees and terminating in simple feet. Currently upholstered in a cream-colored botanical brocade, the piece demonstrates the era’s preference for naturalistic ornamentation and curvaceous silhouettes. While the wood frame retains its original architectural integrity, the surface finish and upholstery exhibit significant age-related wear and staining.
