William McKendree Snyder began his art training in 1869 with John Insco Williams in Cincinnati, Ohio, before spending the first half of the 1870s in Boston and New York City studying with William Morris Hunt, Albert Bierstadt, George Inness, and Alexander H. Wyant. After his marriage in 1875, Snyder moved to Madison, Indiana, and lived there for the rest of his life. Snyder was one of the first artists to paint in Brown County, Indiana. Though known locally for his portraits, Snyder specialized in detailed, dense forest interiors, especially those of beech trees. Ultimately, he painted over 700 landscapes in southern Indiana, southern Ohio, and northern Kentucky. Snyder changed his signature in the 1890s. He fluctuated between using “M” or “McK” in the middle of his name.
