Chinese Carved Elmwood Armchair
Item Details
This ornate Chinese armchair is constructed from Northern Elm, a material heavily used in traditional Chinese furniture manufacture. The chair features an ’Official’s Hat’ top rail with a decorative ruyi head crest, sitting atop an exceptionally detailed pierced splat. The splat is intricately carved with pomegranates, birds, and stylized cloud scrolls, representing longevity and prosperity. The side arms are designed with openwork geometric scrollwork, while the seat is set over a carved frieze. The chair is supported by square legs terminating in subtle hoof feet, joined by a standard peripheral stretcher for stability. The overall condition shows scratches, nicks, and abrasions consistent with the age and use of a late 19th or early 20th-century piece.
