Chinese Elm Three-Drawer Altar Desk, Mid to Late 19th Century
Item Details
This 19th-century Chinese altar desk is an authentic example of Northern provincial cabinetry. Rather than a heavy lacquer, the piece is finished with a deep oxblood-toned pigment stain that highlights the natural grain of the wood while providing a rich, dark patina. The desk features three drawers with hand-cut joinery and original brass hardware, supported by an apron with traditional scroll-carved spandrels. The extensive surface wear and ‘dry’ finish are characteristic of pieces from the Shanxi region, where arid climates contribute to this specific type of wood contraction and finish erosion over time.
