American Country Pine and Cherry Tavern Table, 19th Century

Item Details

This 19th-century American tavern table is a robust example of vernacular country furniture, likely intended for a kitchen or common room. The table features a wide, two-board pine top with a generous overhang, supported by a cherry wood base. The undercarriage is constructed with traditional pinned mortise-and-tenon joinery, evidenced by visible square wooden pegs at each leg junction. The tapered legs provide a lightened silhouette to an otherwise utilitarian form. Forensic examination of the underside reveals traces of an original green-painted surface, a common decorative finish for 19th-century rural American furniture. The table retains a heavily developed historic patina, with the top surface showing the extensive markings and wear of over a century of domestic utility.
