Pair of Aesthetic Movement Carved Walnut Side Chairs, Late 19th Century

Item Details

This pair of late 19th-century side chairs exemplifies the Aesthetic Movement’s focus on delicate, geometric forms and stylized botanical carvings. Constructed from solid walnut, each chair features a sophisticated openwork splat centered by a carved rosette within a circular medallion, flanked by molded stiles and a camel-back top rail with architectural notched corners. The seats are professionally upholstered in a muted peach velvet with piped detailing, a result of modern renovation. The chairs are supported by front legs featuring fine fluting and ring-turned collars, while the rear legs exhibit a graceful saber sweep. The combination of Neo-Grec and Aesthetic motifs suggests a high-end production likely from a major American cabinetmaking center or an English workshop of the late Victorian era.
