Pair of Continental European Empire Inlaid Lyre-Back Side Chairs

Item Details

This pair of 19th-century Empire side chairs represents the late Neoclassical fascination with antiquity and musical symbolism. The chairs feature the iconic lyre-back splat, meticulously hand-carved with a central shell and vertical strings. The broad, swept-back crest rails are adorned with intricate marquetry depicting mythological swans and cherubic figures in contrasting light woods. Supported by elegant saber-form rear legs and tapered front legs with delicate foliate inlays, the chairs exhibit the rich grain and warm patina of aged fruitwood. Visible structural shrinkage at the mortise-and-tenon joints serves as a testament to the organic nature of the historic timbers and traditional cabinetry techniques of the early 1800s.
